The first snow on the Swabian Alb

The first proper one Snow on the Swabian Jura has packed up everything today – roofs, meadows, forests, even the paths around the hotel on the Swabian Jura suddenly look as though they've been freshly coated. And it is precisely on a day like this that November shows itself from its absolute best side. No grey, no drizzle, but blue sky, crisp air and that quiet moment when the fresh Snowfall makes everything a bit quieter. When you go outside today, you can hear almost nothing except your footsteps in the snow and perhaps the occasional bird wondering whether it really wanted to stay here this winter. For us here at the Landhotel Winter, that is always a bit of a starting signal: winter is now official. And yes, that makes the Alb rather special somehow – only yesterday it was still autumn, and today everything already looks completely transformed, just without the kitsch, simply clear and clean. People arriving here are often taken aback at first by how much further the view suddenly stretches because the snow makes the contours so distinct. And when the sun blazes down like it is today, the landscape almost glows like a great white stage where absolutely nothing needs to happen for it to be good. We shall see how long this lovely backdrop lasts.

While everything outside is freshly frosted, our winter edition is in full swing both indoors and outdoors. Our heated swimming pool is steaming like a warm oasis in the middle of the white Alb. We keep a stable 29 degrees, no matter what the winter outside is up to. There is hardly anything better than lying in the warm water while looking out over the edge into the vast, white landscape. You can really feel your body winding down while winter plays out its programme all around you. Some swim their lengths at a leisurely pace, others simply lean against the edge of the pool and enjoy the contrast of warm water and cold air. And of course – our Finnish sauna also gets packed. Things are usually properly busy there by the afternoon because many people head straight inside to thaw out after a turn in the snow. Especially in winter, it's an unbeatable duo: briefly trudging through the fresh Alb air, maybe even with snowflakes on your face, and then straight into the heat. That's not wellness poetry, it just feels fantastic and does everyone worn out by daily life a power of good.

What particularly strikes us on days like these: The Swabian Jura shows itself in the Winter a side to it that many underestimate. People often think of windy heights, frosty fingers and slippery paths. Sure, that happens too. But then there are days like today, when the mix of sunshine, snow and clear visibility simply beats everything else. Exactly why many guests love this time of year with us. Last night's snowfall has turned the entire Lautertal into a bright winter wonderland, and when you step back outside from the warm pool or sauna, everything feels freshly organised. No chaos, no clutter, just peace. And that peace makes the Alb in winter somehow feel stronger, more present. It's hard to explain, but easy to feel.

Perhaps it is because you automatically move a bit slower, look more consciously and tend to take in the little things: the breath hanging in the air, the footprints in the snow, the crunching under your shoes, the light that feels different than in summer. Regardless of whether you are coming for relaxation, for a break or simply because you a Hotel looking for on the Swabian Alb that allows you to have a hassle-free winter day – today is precisely the kind of day for which we love this whole thing here. And if it stays like this, we're in for a really lovely winter.
